Submissions

Tattered Flag Press is an independent publisher specialising, primarily, in books on military, aeronautical and naval history, but we are interested in publishing books with wider historical appeal.

We welcome proposals for book projects by both established and first-time writers, but above all, we are committed to publishing well-written, well-researched books. We do ask that all proposals submitted must be based upon extensive, original research.

Before we can consider your book proposal, we ask that you provide us with certain basic information to enable us to present the details of your project for consideration by our editorial desk and, on occasion, by our outside associates.

Please do not send your manuscript without first inquiring whether we are interested in viewing it. Instead, send us a brief letter via e-mail to the address below. PLEASE NOTE: Do NOT send attachments with your email at this stage. Your proposal letter should form the body of your email.

This letter must include the following information:

• Your name and full contact details
• Working title and topic area (e.g. Napoleonic, First World War campaign, Second World War battle, Cold War aviation etc.);
• Thesis paragraph (broadly what your work is about, and how it differs from other published works on the subject). This should also include, if possible at this stage, a proposed table of contents
• Projected length (typed A4 pages and/or the word count)
• Projected date of completion (including narrative text, acquisition of illustrated material and captions, appendices, forewords etc)
• A brief outline of the main sources and/or archives you are using or have used to produce your manuscript
• If any part of the proposed work has been previously published
• A brief biography of you (brief details on education, background, any previous publications or articles, hobbies and interests)
• When was the most recent book on the topic published, if at all?
• Any other pertinent information that you feel may assist in consideration of your proposal

Upon receipt of a proposal, we will review it and respond to it as quickly as we can. Please appreciate however, that as an independent, private and specialist company, each proposal will be considered carefully but under the constraints of time and prevailing workload.

If we find your project of interest, we will ask to see at least a part of the complete draft manuscript or, if the manuscript is yet to be completed, we will discuss with you how we might go forward. A decision to publish will most likely involve a period of several weeks.

We very much prefer submissions via e-mail as it is a generally quicker, cheaper and more environmentally friendly option for you and us. However, if you are unable to send electronically and need to send us a letter, and you require a reply in writing (as opposed to a reply via e-mail), please include a Stamped and Self-Addressed envelope suitable for an A4 reply. This will make it much easier for us to respond to you.
